Jump Rope Glitch

advertisem*nt

Recently, users have discovered a way to get 99,999 jumps in the Jump Rope minigame in the Metro Kingdom using a glitch. It can be tricky to pull off - here's the steps you'll need to take:

  • Step 1 - Head to New Donky City and go to the main plaza near the jump rope area where Talkatoo is.
  • Step 2 - Jump and throw Cappy over Talkatoo's head so that it will come back and hit him, and talk to Talkatoo right before Cappy smacks into the bird. This can take a lot of practice - but if done right, the camera will lock into place until you warp somewhere else, and Talkatoo can't be talked to again. However, we don't want to lock the camera just yet.
  • Step 3 - Once you have gotten the hang of the timing, once you speak to Talkatoo before Cappy hits him, hold ZR or ZL and immediately roll away from Talkatoo. This will hold the camera from glitching UNTIL you have Talkatoo in the screen again, at which point the camera will stop moving. We're almost there.
  • Step 4 - With this method, roll away from Talkatoo, then run towards the jump rope area and perform a ground pound as the camera pans over to load in Talkatoo. If done correctly, Mario will freeze standing in midair near the jump rope. You'll need to position yourself near enough to the jump rope that it will start counting you as jumping - even though you are frozen in place, and no jumping will be needed.
  • Now you can sit back and get the highest score you want! (note that it will take a LONG time to reach the max number - about 15 hours total).

Use Amiibo for Unlimited Hearts

Each amiibo can give you some items when you use them while playing - but Peach Amiibos in particular are especially good to have. Tapping a Peach Amiibo when playing (not at uncle amiibo) will give you a Life-Up Heart - and the best part: It can be used as many times as you want with no cooldown!

8-Bit Marios in the Wild

When adventuring around, there's a chance you may spot 8-bit Marios or 8-Bit Peaches hiding on certain walls. They take on the form of their Cat-Mario and Cat-Peach varieties from Super Mario 3D World, and throwing Cappy at them will reward you with Hearts or lots of coins!

You can even find a secret character hiding on the Dark Side of the Moon. Travel through the main platform towards the end where the Spark Pylon leads to the tower - and turn around and look right behind a rock-like tomato to find a hidden 8-bit Rosalina!

The Odyssey Globe Secret

When standing on the Odyssey, there's more you can do with the globe than just toss Cappy on it.

Try jumping on the Odyssey Globe, and as it spins, it will wind up a music-box version of the Cascade Kingdom Theme. The longer you jump on the globe, the longer it will play - and after stopping, the globe will eventually stop spinning along with the music.

Jumping on the globe while visiting Metro Kingdom or any of the Kingdoms after will play a music-box version of Pauline's song - Jump Up, Superstar!

Hint Toad Save Abuse

If you really want to know the locations of nearby Power Moons (but don't want to use our Power Moon Locations guide), there's a way to get a lot of hints without having to spend money or use amiibo - creating extra save files!

Pause the game and enter Data Management, and then create a new save file in one of the four other slots. Once done, spend all your gold coins at Hint Toad until you have a bunch of marked map points with Power Moon Locations. Then, screenshot the map, and reload your previous save file to keep those locations on hand, without spending all the money.

Unlock the Mushroom Kingdom

A secret kingdom - the Mushroom Kingdom, can be unlocked by completing this game. This area serves as your intro to the Post Game, whereupon you can find even more Power Moons, and you'll learn of new secrets and unlock more features that include:

  • Music List
  • Power Moon-locked Costumes (available at Crazy Cap Stores for Gold Coins)
  • Achievements (Speak to Archivist Toadette in Peach's Castle)
  • Moon Rocks can now be activated in almost every Kingdom - and unleash even more Power Moons to find!
  • Crazy Cap Stores sell unlimited amounts of Power Moons, allowing you to buy your way to that next unlockable.

A Dog Joins the Crew

No doubt you may have seen a certain pup running around certain Kingdoms after completing the main quests in that area. But there's also a way to have the hat-adorned pooch come aboard the Odyssey.

Once you have obtained 250 Power Moons, unlock the Dark Side, and then check inside the Odyssey upon arrival - and you'll find the dog in the corner of the ship! He will now appear inside the Odyssey in any Kingdom where a dog is not already found running around outside.

Find and Capture Yoshi

Once you have unlocked the Mushroom Kingdom, there's an old friend waiting for you on top of Peach's Castle.

To get up to the castle roof, look along the left side of the moat for a scarecrow - and toss Cappy to reveal a set of stairs. Race up before the time is up, and on the other side of the roof you'll meet Yoshi.

Yoshi can be captured by Cappy, and you can utilize his signature Flutter Jump and tongue attack.

Unlock the Dark (And Darker) Side of the Moon

Even after completing the main story and entering the Mushroom Kingdom during Post Game, your journey isn't over. Inspecting the Odyssey will show that yet more Power Moon can be collected to further upgrade the ship - and it will take in Power Moons from any Kingdom.

Once you collect 250 Power Moons across all Kingdoms, you can upgrade the ship another time to unlock the Dark Side - a secret area located near the Moon Kingdom, but as a separate site altogether at Rabbit Ridge.

Unlike other Kingdoms, this area is home to only rabbits, and a large carrot-like tower is where you can find the Broodals - who will challenge you to a gauntlet of battles one by one. Complete this task, and you'll unlock the Royal Crown and Royal Outfit. After this, you can find an additional amount of Power Moons in challenge rooms and using Hint Art.

Once you obtain 500 Power Moons across all Kingdoms, you can upgrade the ship one more time to unlock Darker Side, another secret location. This area has one long big challenge for a single Power Moon, and rewards you with the Invisibility Hat!

Additionally, after obtaining 999 Power Moons, the Odyssey will be completely filled - and you can head to Peach's Castle to find a giant Top Hat adorning the castle. Getting to the top of the hat and spinning Cappy will trigger a small cutscene of appreciation.

The cheats below have been patched out of Super Mario Odyssey but are preserved here for their historical value.

Patched: Darker Side Gauntlet Skip

Note: In February 2018, this was patched out and it no longer works. The Darker Side of the Moon provides one of the toughest challenges in Mario Odyssey, due to the lack of checkpoints. The end goal even teases you from the moment you step out of the Odyssey - but there is a glitch discovered by a reddit user to get across the crater to the other side without going underground at all!

We recommend you try out the challenge first - but if you are tired of dying, or just want to learn a neat speed-running trick - check out the instructions below.

Darker Side Skip Video

All you need is Cappy, a frog, some low gravity, and a bit of patience and timing:

  • At the start of the Darker Side area, look for the two frogs leading up to the entrance to the gauntlet.
  • Capture one frog and jump up into the air.
  • As you jump high in the air, press ZR or ZL to jump out of the first frog.
  • As you fall down, lightly jump on the second frog - as he's jumping up on his own.
  • As soon as you bounce off the second frog, capture it with Cappy and it will be glitched in a swimming position hovering where you captured it.
  • DO NOT JUMP OR SHAKE YOUR CONTROLLER - doing so will send the frog out of it's glitched state. Instead, just swim forward through the air towards the building on the far side. It will take awhile as the frog swims slow and you can't speed it up - but you'll be safe from falling so long as you don't cause the frog to jump until you've reached the other side.
